The Hanoi Opera House on Trang Tien closed after 31 January 2026. The state archives expect the work to run about two years, so for now the visit is the yellow facade in the square.

The Hanoi Opera House facade on Trang Tien The Hanoi Opera House on Trang Tien in September 2022, before the restoration. Yellow walls, a colonnade, the name on the frieze, and the flag over the roof. The square still looks like this from across the road. The auditorium is shut.

I would take a room on that square if the walk is the week. The Shilla, open since 23 October, is the other shore of West Lake.

I would take the Metropole, at 15 Ngo Quyen, when I want the garden and a hotel that has stood in the French Quarter since 1901. It became the first Sofitel Legend in 2009. Ask for the Heritage Wing. That side came back in 2023 after its own two-year renovation, and it is the old corridor. The Opera Wing is the neo-classical rooms, a short walk from a theatre you can only look at. There are 358 rooms, starting at 32 square metres. They will show you the bomb shelter, and Graham Greene used the building in The Quiet American. That is the history they like to tell. The 125th-anniversary programme is this year's marketing.

Capella is the house I would take when 358 rooms feels like too much hotel. Bill Bensley did 47 of them at 11 Le Phung Hieu, open since 30 March 2021, a few steps from the same facade. A premier room goes up to 35 square metres. The Madama Butterfly suite goes up to 194, so say which one you mean before you pay. He has written a romance about a 1920s inn for people leaving the opera. The company has also called the building an old theatre. I cannot tell those two stories apart from the sidewalk.

If the next morning is the airport, I would sleep at the Shilla. Three Hundred Nineteen Rooms West of West Lake is the opening: 23 October 2026, 6 Hoang Minh Thao, Starlake, pool and Bar M on the 35th floor. Their 25 minutes to Noi Bai assumes a clear road. A Friday night coming back from Trang Tien is a longer drive than that sentence.

Gia is the reason to cross town. Sam Tran and Long Tran have cooked at 61 Van Mieu, opposite the Temple of Literature, since 2020, and in June 2026 the restaurant kept its Michelin star for a fourth year. The New Banquet: Vietnam is the piece about the food. Dinner here is Tuesday to Saturday. Lunch is only Friday and Saturday. The page lists 3,500,000 dong before a 7 percent service charge and tax, and they want about three hours. A card hold of 1,000,000 dong a person sticks if you cancel inside two days. Read the diet line before you invite anyone: the menu has seafood, egg, and dairy in it, and they will not build a vegetarian version. If that is your table, choose another night. Michelin's clock and the restaurant's clock disagree. The confirmation from gia-hanoi.com is the one that seats you.

Chapter is the night you stay in the French Quarter. Quang Dung cooks at 12C Chan Cam, Monday to Saturday from 6:00, dark on Sunday. It is a tasting menu, charcoal and produce from the northern mountains, and the guide lists it as Selected. From Ngo Quyen or Le Phung Hieu the car can stay where it is.

The Temple of Literature is Gia's morning, and it is worth the ticket on a day you are not eating there. The entrance is 58 Quoc Tu Giam, open 8:00 to 5:00, at 70,000 dong. Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday they also run an evening programme from 6:00 to 10:00, and that is a second ticket. Cover your shoulders for the shrines. The way out they list puts you on Van Mieu, which is her street.

A gate inside the Temple of Literature, Hanoi A gate inside the Temple of Literature, Hanoi: a wet brick path under the trees, toward a white arch and red doors. The exit onto Van Mieu is the street where Gia sits across from the temple.

Practical notes

No train from Noi Bai is going to save this arrival. The lines that would reach the airport broke ground in June 2026, and they are a 2030 project. The metro that does run, Line 3 from Nhon to Cau Giay, has been open since August 2024 and stops well short of the terminal. Grab's August map puts domestic cars on lane 3 in front of Hall E, and international cars in parking P1 or P7. Be at the pin. The driver gets about five minutes. Bus 86 is 50,000 dong to the railway station if you want the cheap leg, and then you are still in a car. Starlake is the short ride. Ngo Quyen is the long one.

If the week goes south, The New Banquet: Vietnam already has the Saigon table.
