On 11 June 2026, at Gazarte in Athens, the Institute for Art and Olfaction announced the Independent Category winners of its twelfth Art and Olfaction Awards. One of them was Taiwanese: Ici, le pas s’arrête (凝山) by TERRA•T, written by perfumer Kaiwei Hsieh for creative director Terrence Chen.
We'll be blunt. Most diaspora wardrobes already have a European niche bottle and a Japanese hinoki or incense experiment. Fewer people can name a Taiwanese house the way they name a Seoul tailor or a Tokyo watchmaker. That is changing, and the Athens result is a useful bookmark rather than a coronation.
The prize matters because the Independent and Artisan categories are judged blind across multiple rounds. Judges score scent and intention, not logo size. For collectors who treat fragrance as object culture (read: something you choose with the same care as a bag or a watch), that is the filter you want.

What follows is a circuit map: who is making the work, where to smell it in Taipei, and how to buy without treating the island as a novelty shelf.
Why Taiwan, Why Now
Taiwanese independent perfume has been building for more than a decade. P.Seven took an Independent Category Golden Pear in 2022 with Aged Tea (暗香). SCENT Taipei, the island's first dedicated professional fragrance showcase, ran 20–23 March 2026 at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1 with the International Scent & Sense Association (ISSA) as co-organizer. In early June, NOSE WAY brought TERRA•T, DanLo, and related lines to Esxence in Milan, where trade noses were already talking about Asian profiles written by Asian teams rather than briefed from Europe.
The Athens win sits on that spine and makes the scene easier to justify on a packing list.

Kaiwei Hsieh and TERRA•T
Hsieh is the nose behind the TERRA•T win and much of the NOSE WAY house catalogue that followed. Taiwanese coverage places her as an ISSA teaching consultant and a Grasse Institute of Perfumery (GIP) certified instructor; confirm current course listings with ISSA if education is your interest. On the bottle that travelled to Athens, the credit line is clear: Hsieh as perfumer, Chen as creative director, TERRA•T as the brand.
Ici, le pas s’arrête means, roughly, "here, the step stops." The Chinese title, 凝山, freezes a mountain in place. The Art and Olfaction winner citation frames Taiwan incense cedar (Calocedrus formosana, 台灣肖楠) as the material of "quiet grandeur," closer to temple wood that absorbs and protects than to a tourist souvenir. Fragrantica lists a progression from clary sage and lavender into Cuban cigar, cypress, and that Taiwan cedar, then sandalwood, peach tree, and birch. You will form your own opinion on skin. The useful point for buyers is that the brief is landscape and kinship, not "Asian floral" as a marketing category.
TERRA•T (Terra plus Taiwan) is the landscape line inside Chen's NOSE WAY world. Sister line DanLo (等路, the Hokkien gift you bring back) works Taiwanese dessert and snack memory; DanLo's Grounded Hills, also by Hsieh for Chen, was an Independent Category finalist in the same 2026 cycle. If 凝山 is the mountain stop, DanLo is the night-market pocket you zip into a carry-on. Both reward a counter visit more than a blind online order.
On NOSE WAY's site at verification, Ici, le pas s’arrête listed around NT$4,980. Treat that as a planning figure; confirm size, stock, and current price before you fly.
NOSE WAY: The Retail Spine
Terrence Chen built NOSE WAY (迷香人) as an independent fragrance retailer before the house lines. The Xinyi counter at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Xinyi Place A11, 2F, No. 11 Songshou Road, is the practical Taipei start: TERRA•T and DanLo sit beside imported indie houses, with staff used to slow smelling rather than commission pressure. Other Taiwan counters include Taipei Station and Kaohsiung Hanshin Arena; hours and floor maps shift, so check noseway.com.tw the morning you go.
This is the Independent Category model in physical form. Brand creative direction and retail taste live under one roof; the formula is written by a commissioned nose. If you already shop Ormonde Jayne or Pierre Guillaume in London or Paris, the A11 counter will feel familiar. The difference is that the Taiwanese lines are no longer the side note.
Ask for TERRA•T first if Athens is why you came. Ask for DanLo if you want something warmer and more edible. Leave room to smell one international bottle you do not know, so the visit does not collapse into nationalism.
P.Seven: The Tea House That Got There First
P.Seven is the other pole of the circuit. Founder Pan Yu-Ching, a former tea master, started the house in 2012 with Taiwan tea as the brief. Aged Tea (暗香), made with Huang Chien-Shun, won Independent at Art and Olfaction in 2022: green and oolong openings, black tea and smoked plum, then Taiwanese woods. Panseven.com still prices Aged Tea around NT$4,050 and other tea bottles from roughly NT$2,450; confirm before purchase.
The newer story is ink. After the tea line's quiet "ink" dry-down, Pan extended the idea into the Ink series (墨花, 墨茶, 墨竹): debuted at Isetan Shinjuku in October 2025, returned to Taiwan in February 2026. For Tokyo-based readers, Shinjuku is the overseas tasting room. For Taipei visitors, the Yongkang concept store at No. 4, Lane 12, Yongkang Street (Dongmen MRT Exits 4–6; typical hours about 10:30–21:00) is the direct stop. P.Seven also appeared in a 2025 Osaka Expo cultural presentation with the Shennong Life team and, from April 2025, at Taoyuan Airport Terminal 2 duty-free: useful if you decide after your last dinner.
Pan's project and Hsieh's win are not rivals in any useful sense. One house built international recognition through tea. The other just cleared the same blind-judging bar with mountain wood. Together they give you a two-stop afternoon rather than a single boutique moment.
How to Shop the Circuit
One afternoon in Taipei. Start at NOSE WAY A11 for TERRA•T and DanLo. Cross to Yongkang for P.Seven. If you still have nose left, Hours & Ours on Yongji Road (Xinyi alley retail) is a third independent counter for international indies; it is adjacent infrastructure, not a Taiwanese house.
Tokyo layover. Check Isetan Shinjuku for current P.Seven Ink presence before you assume stock. Department-store counters rotate.
Airport exit. Taoyuan T2 duty-free for P.Seven when you need a sealed bottle on the way out. Confirm the counter still carries the line; airport retail changes.
Order from abroad. Both noseway.com.tw and panseven.com ship internationally under published thresholds. Blind-buying a cedar or aged-tea composition is riskier than buying a citrus cologne. Prefer a Taiwan tasting trip, or start with a discovery set if the site offers one.
What to wear it with. These are intimate woods, teas, and ink-adjacent dry-downs. They sit closer to skin than to sillage contests. That is a feature for diaspora dinners where strong fragrance reads as careless. Soft projection, specific material, no need to announce the brand at the table.
What Collectors Are Actually Buying
Keep the French houses. Add a regional grammar: incense cedar and hinoki-adjacent woods, aged oolong, ink and paper memory, dessert as gourmand without Paris pastry tropes. The best bottles smell like places you have walked, or places your parents described, without tipping into costume.
Hsieh's win does not make every Taiwanese launch collectible. It does mean that when a friend in London or Vancouver asks what to bring back from Taipei besides pineapple cake and tea, you have a better answer than "whatever is at the airport." Smell A11. Smell Yongkang. Buy the one that still interests you at hour three, when the top notes have stopped performing.
That is the circuit: Athens for the headline, Taipei for the decision.
