The Banquet note
TEFAF Maastricht opened at the MECC in 1988 under The European Fine Art Foundation, after earlier Dutch painting and antiques fairs merged in the mid-1980s. The 2027 edition runs from 13 to 18 March, with invitation-only previews on 11 and 12 March. Recent editions have gathered more than 260 dealers across ancient art through modern and contemporary work, jewelry and design, with specialist vetting committees and Art Loss Register checks. Fly into Brussels, Cologne, Amsterdam or Düsseldorf and sleep in Maastricht. The MECC in Randwyck is a fairground, not a charming walk from the old town, so budget a short taxi or bus rather than romanticising the river. Preview days on 11 and 12 March are invitation only; public tickets sell by day. Walk slowly. Vetting is the reason people still come, and it rewards looking at backs, mounts and labels as much as faces. Evenings belong in the historic centre. March also holds Art Basel Hong Kong later in the month; most collectors pick one continent.
Plan it well
Book a Maastricht hotel, not an Amsterdam base you will resent every morning. Keep preview paper and public tickets straight. One focused day beats two exhausted ones.
