Melbourne Art Fair

Melbourne Art Fair began in 1988 as the Australian Contemporary Art Fair and has been owned and operated by the nonprofit Melbourne Art Foundation since 2003. The Foundation reports more than AUD 1.6 million distributed in artist fees and grants and an estimated AUD 96.4 million in facilitated fair sales since that stewardship began, which is the useful nonprofit proof for collectors who care where their ticket money sits. The fair became annual from 2024 and keeps its long-term home at the Denton Corker Marshall-designed Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre at 2A Clarendon Street, South Wharf, after earlier decades at the Royal Exhibition Building. The 2027 edition runs from 18 to 21 February. Since 2022 the William Mora Indigenous Art Centre Program has brought Indigenous-owned art centres onto the floor beside commercial galleries.

Treat South Wharf as the fair day and the Arts Precinct as another. NGV International, ACCA and the riverside hotels sit a short walk or tram from MCEC; do not stack a full museum morning onto opening traffic. Book lodging near Southbank or the CBD rather than a distant airport base. Preview paper and public tickets are separate products once the 2027 shop opens. If Hong Kong Art Basel is also on the itinerary, Melbourne is the warmer week beforehand for regional shopping lists, not a substitute for Wan Chai.
