Seventy-room Higashiyama hotel opened 30 October 2019 at 360 Kodaiji Masuyacho, developed with Takenaka Corporation on the grounds of Kyoyamato, the kaiseki house that has stood here since 1877. Interiors are by Tony Chi and Associates with Takenaka; landscape architect Yasuo Kitayama shaped the gardens. Inventory was kept at 70 keys, including nine suites, so the low-rise house would stay in scale with Kodai-ji, Ninenzaka, and Yasaka Pagoda next door. Pagoda View categories face the postcard; garden and hillside rooms trade that outlook for quieter courtyards. On-site dining includes Yasaka teppanyaki, Kyoto Bistro, Kohaku bar, and Sanso Kyoyamato. Book dinner at Kyoyamato or Yasaka weeks ahead, separately from the room. Book lodging through hyatt.com. Allow extra taxi time on Ninenzaka when temple crowds peak, and have the concierge time Kodai-ji or Kiyomizu for opening from Masuyacho. Cherry blossom and autumn maple seasons sell out this slope first. The stay only helps if you leave the hotel before day-trippers hit the lane. Kikunoi Honten sits a slow walk away if you want three-star kaiseki without crossing town. A late breakfast here wastes the geography you paid for. Taxi drop-off on Masuyacho is tighter than the website photograph suggests; travel light up the slope.
