Where to eat, stay and visit in Kyoto

Kyoto works when you group days by neighborhood: Higashiyama and Gion for temple slopes and evening lanes; Arashiyama for bamboo and riverside gardens; Fushimi for Inari’s torii climb. The Banquet hotel list runs from ryokan classics Hiiragiya and Tawaraya to Park Hyatt Kyoto, Aman Kyoto, Capella Kyoto, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto and Sowaka; dinner planning usually starts with Kikunoi Honten, Gion Nishikawa or temple vegetarian at Shigetsu; Kaikado is the tea-caddy stop when shopping fits between temple mornings. Arrive early at the most photographed sites, and in Gion follow local rules on private alleys and photography around maiko and geiko. Book dining and lodging far ahead for cherry blossom, autumn foliage and Art Collaboration Kyoto weeks; buses and IC cards cover most visitor routes once luggage is parked.
