The Banquet note
Sydney Contemporary launched in 2013 at Carriageworks under founder Tim Etchells, who developed ART HK (now Art Basel Hong Kong) and whose portfolio also includes ART SG, Taipei Dangdai and Art Central. The fair moved from a biennial to an annual cycle in 2017. Its tenth edition occupied Carriageworks from 3 to 6 September 2026 with a VIP preview on 2 September, bringing together more than one hundred galleries and more than five hundred artists. The fair reports cumulative sales above AUD 154 million and more than 250,000 visitors across its editions. The 2027 return is scheduled for 9 to 12 September at 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh, with exhibitor applications expected to open in late 2026.
Plan Eveleigh as its own day. Carriageworks is a nineteenth-century railway workshop, not a CBD stroll from Circular Quay; use Redfern Station or rideshares rather than romanticising the distance. Keep one clear block for the fair floor and another for the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia or gallery neighbourhoods if you extend the trip.
