Yokosuka Museum of Art

Municipal art museum at 4-1 Kamoi in Kannonzaki Prefectural Park, designed by Riken Yamamoto and opened in 2007 for Yokosuka’s centennial. Much of the building sits below grade under a glass outer shell that frames Tokyo Bay and the surrounding forest; circular openings and a rooftop plaza keep the landscape part of the visit rather than a backdrop. The museum holds several thousand works with a strong local and modern Japanese focus, including the Taniuchi Rokuro Pavilion for magazine-cover illustration. After roughly ten months of renovation, the main building reopened on 5 September 2026 with collection and reopening exhibitions; confirm what is on view before you leave Tokyo. Regular hours run 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the rooftop plaza typically open 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Closed the first Monday of each month unless that Monday is a holiday, and from 29 December to 3 January; temporary closures can fall outside those dates when galleries change over. Collection and Taniuchi Rokuro tickets are about ¥450 for adults and ¥350 for high-school students, university students, and visitors sixty-five and over; junior-high students and younger enter free; special exhibitions set separate prices that usually include the permanent rooms. Timed tickets are not required for ordinary visits. Reach the museum by Keikyu bus toward Kannonzaki from Maborikaigan, Uraga, or JR Yokosuka Station, then a short walk from the museum stop. Useful as the visitable public face of Yamamoto’s threshold architecture when you want glass, bay light, and park air in one half-day rather than another central Tokyo museum queue.
