Royal estate of Louis XIV southwest of Paris, with the Hall of Mirrors (Galerie des Glaces, built 1678 to 1684) as the room of the 1 September 1686 Siamese audience and the Estate of Trianon beyond the gardens for the Grand Trianon on the site of the short-lived Porcelain Trianon. Timed Palace tickets are required and sold online; the Palace is closed Mondays. High season typically runs about 9:00 to 18:30 April through October. Reach Versailles Château-Rive Gauche on RER C when operating (about a ten-minute walk), or use Transilien alternatives. Add a Passport or Trianon ticket if you want the Grand Trianon after noon.

While you're there
Do the Grand Apartments and Hall of Mirrors on your timed Palace slot, then walk or take the little train toward Trianon after noon. Buy a return train ticket before evening queues build at Versailles Château-Rive Gauche.
Pro Tip: Book the earliest Palace slot you can honestly make; the Hall of Mirrors is quieter in the first half hour than at midday, and Trianon does not open until noon anyway.
