Dover Street Market Ginza
Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe's concept store opened its Tokyo outpost in March 2012 inside Ginza Komatsu West at 6-9-5 Ginza, spreading roughly 3,000 square metres over six floors and planting a deliberately unruly flag in a conservative luxury district. Kawakubo runs it with Adrian Joffe, her husband and the president of Comme des Garçons, on the model they opened on London's Dover Street in 2004: a department store rebuilt as a curatorial argument. The operating principle is Kawakubo's 'beautiful chaos', with Comme des Garçons lines beside edited streetwear and guest maisons, each designer handed a space to build themselves. Artist and architect commissions hold the building together and have included Kohei Nawa's White Pulse columns, large Daido Moriyama photographs, and Stephanie Quayle's sculpted elephant. Houses take the building seriously enough to colonise it: Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama took the entire first floor in January 2023. The detail worth planning around is tachiagari, the biannual changeover when the whole store shuts for a few days and reopens completely rebuilt, so check before travelling for it. Rose Bakery at the top is the stamina stop between floors. Hours run 11:00 to 20:00 daily and tax-free purchase is available with a passport. Ginza Station Exit A2 (Ginza, Marunouchi, Hibiya lines) is the cleanest approach. Ginza takes Tokyo-exclusive drops and collaborations that never reach London or New York, which is the honest argument for shopping here rather than at home.

While you're there
Start at the top or bottom and work straight through; skipping floors breaks the installation logic. Rose Bakery is the stamina play, not a destination lunch that replaces a proper Ginza meal.
Pro Tip: Ask staff which floors were reset most recently; the tachiagari calendar is the difference between a static mall visit and catching the laboratory mid-experiment.
- Best for
- Kawakubo's retail philosophy at full scale after the Aoyama flagship.
- Pair with
- Comme des Garçons Aoyama the same day, then Isetan Shinjuku if you still have buyer-floor energy.
- Season / timing
- Installation resets twice a year change the experience; return after a tachiagari if you can.
