The Banquet note

Songkran takes its name from a calendrical transition and marks the traditional Thai New Year. UNESCO’s 2023 inscription emphasizes reunion, respect for elders and ancestors, merit-making and good fortune. Families clean homes, offer food to monks, bathe Buddha images and perform rod nam dam hua, pouring water respectfully for elders and requesting a blessing. That measured use of water supplies the cultural grammar for the joyous public splashing that now fills parts of Bangkok.

Plan the day in two registers. Begin with a temple visit in dry, shoulder-and-knee-covering clothing, then change before entering one officially confirmed public water zone. Silom, Siam and Khao San have hosted major celebrations, while the Maha Songkran flagship venue moved between Ratchadamnoen, Sanam Luang and Benjakitti Park from 2024 to 2026. Their precedent is useful, but Bangkok’s 2027 venues, hours, closures and zone-specific rules still require a fresh announcement.

Plan it well

Choose refundable accommodation near BTS or MRT rather than booking around a previous festival venue. Carry dry temple-appropriate clothing, waterproof documents and plan indoor breaks during Bangkok’s severe April heat. Recheck TAT, BMA Traffic and official transit channels in March or early April 2027.

Songkran’s annual core dates are fixed at 13–15 April. Bangkok’s 2027 venues, street programmes and any extended festival dates remain unannounced.
