The Banquet note
Design Shanghai began at Shanghai Exhibition Centre in 2014 and returns there from 4 to 7 March 2027. The fair is most revealing where authorship meets production: Chinese designers proposing new forms, material researchers testing applications, manufacturers explaining how objects reach scale and international brands entering a market with its own strong design language. Read the polished room sets alongside systems, surfaces and prototypes, because Shanghai’s design influence often becomes clearest in the route from idea to manufacture.
Recent programmes offer a useful method for walking the fair, although their 2027 return still requires confirmation. TALENTS has connected designers under thirty-five with industry; Materials First has made samples and testing part of the conversation; Made in JDZ has linked Jingdezhen ceramics with contemporary production; Beyond Craft has brought Japanese craft and material research into regional exchange. Design in the City, confirmed from 22 February to 7 March, extends that reading into studios and venues across Shanghai.
Plan it well
Stay in Jing’an for the simplest fair route and use Jing’an Temple station on Lines 2, 7 or 14. Reserve a separate block for Design in the City and any West Bund museums, which sit in a different part of Shanghai. Recheck the official site before booking tickets because 2027 public days, entrances and opening hours remain pending.
