British Museum

National museum on Great Russell Street in Bloomsbury, open daily with free general admission and paid special exhibitions in the Great Court galleries. From 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, Room 35 (the Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery) holds Korea: 2,000 Years of Creativity, a chronological survey of about 185 works drawn largely from the Lee Kun-hee bequest to the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, with a handful of British Museum pieces. Lead curator Sang-ah Kim shaped the hang; standout cases include Jeong Seon’s National Treasure landscape Clearing after Rain on Mount Inwang (1751), a thirteenth-century gourd-shaped celadon ewer, Three Kingdoms gilt bronze, and contemporary loans that close with Nam June Paik. Early-bird special-exhibition tickets have listed from £14; later adult bands have posted near £20, with concessions and National Art Pass rates below that, and under-16s free with a ticketed adult. Confirm current prices and member entry on britishmuseum.org/exhibitions/korea. Typical hours run 10:00-17:00, Fridays until 20:30; the Korea hang closes 1-2 December for a display rotation, and the museum closes 24-26 December. After the ticketed show, the free Korea Foundation Gallery in Room 67 (opened 2000, refurbished 2014) keeps the permanent Korean collection on view. Nearest stations are Tottenham Court Road and Holborn. Book timed exhibition tickets online before you stack a Mayfair dinner; Great Court queues move faster when you arrive with a barcode.

While you're there

Bloomsbury sits a short Tube hop from Mayfair tables such as Benares and a longer one to Gymkhana. Pair Room 35 with the free Korea gallery in Room 67 before you leave the building; for a second museum day, keep the Victoria and Albert Museum on South Kensington.

Pro Tip: If you care about the light-sensitive paintings, avoid assuming a December visit works; Room 35 is closed 1-2 December for the mid-run rotation, and the museum itself is shut 24-26 December.

Best for
A Bloomsbury morning built around Korean National Treasures in Room 35.
Pair with
