Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing

The Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing occupies a restored haveli at Kheri Gate in Amber, a short walk below Amer Fort, and it is the place to see the block rather than to buy a scarf in a hurry. Galleries hold printed textiles, carving tools, and the sequence of a craft that Sanganer and Bagru still practise. The museum's own hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 5:00, and Sunday, 11:00 to 4:30. Monday is closed, and so are a list of local holidays that includes Dhulandi, Diwali, and Independence Day. The building also shuts the galleries for summer maintenance, lately from the end of May until 15 July, with staff on site and the exhibitions dark. Confirm on anokhimuseum.com before an August trip. Demonstrations of carving and printing run through the day with a lunch break. The shop can be visited without a gallery ticket if you ask at the desk. Entry is modest next to the fort, and it is not included in the fort ticket or in the state composite. Pair it with an early Amer morning and leave the city-palace afternoon intact. Phone the museum if your driver is unsure of Kheri Gate. Amber's lanes are walkable once you are down from the fort, and they are a poor place to arrive by guessing. Give the rooms an hour. The fort has already taken the spectacle.

While you're there

Amer Fort is the morning above you. Walk down to Kheri Gate rather than trying to park twice. Sanganer and Bagru are separate print days, not a stop you add after the museum.

Pro Tip: If you land in Jaipur between the end of May and 15 July, the haveli may be shut for gallery work even though Amber is heaving. Check the museum page before you promise anyone the block-print hour.

Best for
The block-print history after an early Amer morning.
Pair with
Amer Fort the same morning, before the courtyards fill.
Season / timing
Closed Mondays, and the galleries go dark from late May until 15 July.
