Zao Onsen
Zao Onsen sits at about 880 metres on the western flank of the Zao range in Yamagata City: a sulfur-spring town for acidic baths year-round, Okama crater views when the Echo Line is open, and winter skiing among the juhyo snow monsters. Reach it in about 40–45 minutes by bus or taxi from JR Yamagata Station after the Yamagata Shinkansen from Tokyo, or about 45 minutes from Yamagata Airport. Base near the slopes if ski days are the brief; book KAI Zao or town ryokan nights early for peak snow-monster weeks in January and February.
